I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Board of Directors for the opportunity to serve as the next Executive Director of Mary Centre. I am genuinely excited to step into this role and deeply committed to advancing our Mission, Vision, and Values. I look forward to collaborating with the Board, the people we support and our dedicated employees as we build on our achievements and pursue new opportunities for growth and impact.

On November 5, 2025, we had the privilege of participating in a meaningful lunch and learn hosted by the Faith and Cultural Network. The session featured a powerful presentation titled Images of God: Through the Lens of Disability. The speaker shared insights from the Images of God Project—a deeply reflective and creative initiative that explores how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities perceive and express their understanding of their own spirituality. The presentation offered a compelling perspective on faith, inclusion, and the rich diversity of spiritual expression and experience. It reminded me that every person’s voice and vision of the divine add to the fullness of our shared spiritual journey. In listening to one another, we discover new dimensions of faith, compassion, and community.

On November 9, 2025, a person we support, their Direct Support Professional, and I had the privilege of speaking at a corporate team-building event hosted by Honda Canada. During the event, Honda employees assembled four foldable wheelchairs, which were generously donated to Mary Centre. We were honored to speak about Mary Centre’s Mission, Vision, and Values, and to share how these wheelchairs will make a meaningful impact—enhancing mobility, fostering independence, and improving the overall quality of life for the people we support. We are deeply grateful for Honda Canada’s generosity and commitment to community inclusion.Their support reflects the power of partnership in creating opportunities that change lives.

On November 19, 2025, six people from Mary Centre were honoured to be invited by The Daniels Corporation to attend Songs and Stories from The Journey—a moving musical production celebrating the revitalization of Toronto’s Regent Park community. It was a truly inspiring evening, filled with powerful stories, vibrant community spirit, and remarkable talent. The production brought to life the themes of resilience and renewal, beautifully echoing the narrative told in Mitchell Cohen’s book, Rhythms of Change. We were grateful for the opportunity to witness such a celebration of community transformation and to share in the spirit of inclusion and creativity that continues to shape Regent Park.

As the colder months settle in, we also enter the respiratory season, a time when colds, flu, RSV and other respiratory illnesses become more common. While this season can bring challenges, it’s also an opportunity for us to care for one another in simple, meaningful ways. Together, we can help keep our communities healthy by remembering the importance of infection prevention and control measures such as:

  • Hand hygiene: Regular handwashing remains one of the most effective ways to reduce transmission.
  • Respiratory etiquette: Covering coughs and sneezes helps protect those around us.
  • Vaccinations: Staying up to date with recommended vaccines can reduce risk and severity.
  • Healthy habits: Adequate rest, balanced nutrition, and staying active all support a stronger immune system.
  • Community awareness: Being mindful of symptoms and staying home when unwell helps safeguard vulnerable populations.

Entering respiratory season is not just about caution, it’s also about community care. By taking small, thoughtful steps, we can protect ourselves and one another, ensuring that this season is marked by resilience, compassion, and wellness.

Strategic Plan 2023 Onwards

On behalf of the President of the Board of Directors, John Fisher and the other Board members we are extremely pleased to present our 2023 Strategic Plan:

Mary Centre Multiyear Plan 2023 Onwards (PDF)

We wish to extend our appreciation to all the community stakeholders, family members, the people we have the privilege to support, our employees and the Board of Directors for their critical input into this significant Strategic Plan. In addition, the work of the team (David, David and Barney) from Barnes Management Group was incredible!

Our Strategic Plan builds on three (3) very important domains:
    1. “Opportunities Find Us” – Mary Centre will continue to explore opportunities for growth and partnership. This domain will retain our focus as we develop both frameworks and criteria to assist us in this area.
    2. “Building a Good Life requires Great Teams” – This domain will focus on strengthening our attention to areas such as performance management, remaining an employer of choice, college contacts and building great teams.
The final domain
    1. is entitled “Get Ready for the Journey” – We are aware of the efforts of the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) towards their/our “Journey to Belonging” and the coming transformation of the Developmental Services Sector. We will not only focus on the current and upcoming initiatives from MCCSS and how Mary Centre can integrate them into our services, but we will also continue with our journey with Catholic Charities and how to blend both “partners” focus into our services and supports.

Once again, thank you to everyone and we are looking forward to developing the objectives, strategies and goals of the Strategic Plan into our work.

Respectfully

Don Walker – Executive Director
