Bill

for people like Bill

Bill, who is in his 60s, wanted to attend a church near his Mary Centre home in Scarborough; he describes what he found.

"With the help of my Mary Centre support worker, I made a list of local churches and then chose one.

I feel that the minister is the right minister for me because I am able to talk with him quite a lot after the services. He understands what I want to say and whenever something important comes up, my Mary Centre support worker accompanies me to help out with asking the more difficult questions.

I go to the eight o'clock service where I follow the scriptures and take communion when it is time to go up to the communion rail. At the end of the service, I shake hands with Father and talk with the other parishioners.

I feel included there, as I have been invited to some events. I have attended a corn and wiener roast and a pre-Christmas luncheon.

I look forward to going to church to pray and it helps me to remember family and loved ones. I hadn't gone to church for eight or nine years. I feel good for going back."

How We Help :: Outreach :: Faith Outreach

Spirituality is an essential part of the lives of many people, including those with developmental challenges.

For individuals who live in our supported independent living apartments or who reside in our residences and who wish to connect with a faith community, Mary Centre helps to make this happen for them.

We work with faith communities throughout the Greater Toronto Area and the region of Peel. We devise innovative ways to establish connections. For example, some of our residents serve on the altar in their churches. Others attend weekly services or special events. Staff members or volunteers often assist in providing transportation and company.

We also educate faith communities about those who are developmentally challenged and encourage them to welcome these individuals into their spiritual communities.

To apply for faith outreach at Mary Centre, please contact Carol Chung, (416) 630-5533, ext. 227.
